Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Angiogenesis is the process by which new blood vessels are formed from existing, quiescent vascular endothelium. Angiogenesis is an important biological process, not only under physiological conditions but also in a variety of diseases including cancer, aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Angiogenesis is governed by a strict balance between pro- and anti-angiogenic factors, which together contribute to angiogenic homeostasis. Its violation leads to the above pathologies. Since the extracellular matrix provides a microenvironment that is essential for cellular functionality, its changes during aging could lead to endothelial dysfunction and pathological angiogenesis. In order to study the extremely complex process of angiogenesis, it is necessary to create relevant in vitro and in vivo models. Additionally, a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways mediating angiogenesis may reveal new angiogenesis-associated targets for treating the above diseases.
